The view from our room at the Rosewood Hotel, Abu Dhabi.

Modern Abu Dhabi sprouted from a small hamlet after oil was discovered in 1958.

The new Louvre art museum in Abu Dhabi, designed by Jean Nouvel,

with 23 galleries exhibiting art from humanity's beginning to the present.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi,

with 80 marble domes and 1000 pillars.

The Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi.

Costing US$3.5 billion, one of the most expensive and opulent hotels ever built.

The Presidential Palace complex is in the far left background.

We then check in to the Park Hyatt Hotel in Dubai.

Ferry boats traversing the "Dubai Creek"

connecting modern Dubai to its Historical District.

Virtually all road and shop signs in Dubai are in both Arabic and English.

The needle-like skyscraper is the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.

Peter & Lieschen dine at At.mosphere,

the world's highest restaurant, near the top of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

The view from At.mosphere is more like being in a airplane than in a building.

We stopped for a drink at the Burj Al Arab Hotel, Dubai,

resembling a billowing sail, floating on an artificial island.

We were continually impressed by the innovative architecture

and the speed in which Dubai went from a sleepy hamlet to a major metropolis.
